Spirit Bear

Albino? Polar Bear? Neither. The Kermode Bear (Ursus americanus kermodei) is not an albino bear, nor is it a misplaced polar bear, rather it’s a subspecies of black bear with a polymorphic gene that turns its fur a creamy white colour. Its nose and eyes remain brown. These photos are from a trip to the Great Bear Rainforest in autumn of 2016 with Outershores Expeditions. Spirit bears are an endangered species with currently fewer than 400 specimens existing in the wild.
